Spooktober II Review #19 - Uninvited & Society

After yesterday's looooong dissertation on Dawn of the Dead, I'm going to take it easy today, and just offer up some brief thoughts on a two movies we watched last night.

Uninvited (1988)
Greydon Clark

"Get the cat!"

This is a straight-to-video d-level PG-13 horror movie about a demonic entity that takes over the body of an adorable housecat. The puppet effects are abysmal, the story makes no sense, and it's about 45 minutes too long. There are some amateur gore effects, but no gratuitous nudity, despite being a late 80's shlock horror movie.

The best part of Uninvited is a drunk George Kennedy, who received top billing, despite only being in 20% of the movie.

It's a lazy waste of time, but the cat is pretty cute, and it's free to stream (in godawful quality) from Amazon Prime. Keep the fast forward button handy.

Or just watch this instead:

Society (1989)
Brian Yuzna

"We're just one big happy family...except for a
little incest and psychosis"

Society has a stellar final act, but suffers with poor pacing and a lot of boring nonsense in the first hour. It could've been a more interesting critique of the fashionable rich of the late 80's with a more capable filmmaker. Society feels like Brian Yuzna was a big fan of David Cronenberg, but lacked his storytelling abilities.

Spoilers ahoy:

It's the story of a young man who believes he's inexplicably "different" from the rest of his family. And he's not wrong. It turns out that his family is part of the titular "Society," a different species of humanlike creatures that have been around for as long as people, but feed on the poor like leeches.

Actually, not quite like leeches. Their feeding ritual can best be described as a "flesh orgy" where the victim is turned into a loose meat puppet, and is sucked clean by the upper set. The rest of the Society folks turn into flesh abominations and fuck(?) each other while this is going on. It's a pretty awesome final scene, and certainly worth checking out.

Plus it's good to see what Trump and his kids are up to on the weekends.

Here's a taste:

Summary

I wouldn't call either of these movies "good," but Society is definitely a few cuts above Uninvited. They're both free to stream on Prime, so if you've had some beers or a few tall glasses of water, you'll have a fine time with either.
